A Capital History
Iowa City shares an interesting history with our hometown of Burlington. The state of Iowa was originally born as the Iowa Territory back on July 4, 1838. Burlington was its capital then. Not long thereafter (just a few months, in fact), Iowa began the process of becoming a state and joining the Union.
Governor Robert Lucas thought a more centralized capital might be better, so he asked the Legislative Assembly to create a brand-new city: Iowa City. And so it came to be.
Construction on the Iowa Old Capitol Building got underway in 1841, at which time it became the official state capital. It was home to the final four Territorial legislative sessions and the first four of the Iowa General Assembly.
Eventually, in 1857, Des Moines took over and assumed its status as our current capital city. That means that Burlington and Iowa City are kindred spirits, in a sense — Iowa’s original capitals! That makes our services all the more important to us.
Forbes recently named Iowa City the second-best small metropolitan area for doing business in the entire United States. That makes it the best for business in all of Iowa. Talk about bragging rights!
The honor is no surprise. The city is home to a number of leading businesses and institutions, including:
- University of Iowa (now home to the Iowa Old Capitol Building!)
- University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
- Mercy Hospital
- ACT (the famous college-testing headquarters!)
- Pearson Assessment & Information
- Iowa City VA Medical Center
- Systems Unlimited
- International Automotive Components
- Local government (Johnson County and City of Iowa City)
As you can see, education, medical services, and government play prominent roles in the city’s economy. We realize, though, that the workforce there is far more diverse than many may realize. Businesses small and large run the industrial gamut in Johnson County. Wherever you may work, our legal services are here for you.
